Tight hamstrings are so common! Whether it is something that you have always felt, or an increased awareness as time has gone on or a recent realisation (maybe on a yoga mat!) – it can lead to feeling quite uncomfortable as well as adding tension to areas like the lower back and hip region. I have seen it many times where clients found that stretching their legs more has lead to better back health and a great range of movement in all of their weekly exercises.
Most of us are time-poor when it comes to stretching and relieving tension in the body. So I have put together a very short stretch sequence for you to enjoy. Furthermore, it is suitable for all levels. I recommend that you have a chair nearby and perhaps a couple of yoga blocks if you know certain positions are challenging for you.
What if I am not doing it right?
Many people avoid doing yoga because they are worried that they will do it wrong or they will hurt themselves in some way. Let me reassure you that your health is at far more risk from NOT MOVING than moving daily. If you are worried then just take it slowly and listen to your body. Some postures might be challenging but nothing should ever be painful. Pain is a good indicator that that movement is not for you at this time. The postures don’t have to be perfect in order for them to benefit you.
Having supports nearby like a small coffee table, a wall and yoga blocks can also help in finding your way into the more challenging postures: don’t be afraid to use props till you feel more confident. Some one-to-one sessions will also help you feel more relaxed and empowered on the mat 🙂
